Whether you play for fun or in a poker tournament, you have to know the rules of poker to compete. There are many different poker variants, and some of them have unique rules. For example, cash games have their own special rules. Poker players may be required to contribute to the pot before the deal. A pot is the total bets that have been made by all players in a single deal. A pot can be won by making a bet that no other player calls.
A poker hand is comprised of five cards. It can be anything from a pair of aces to a Royal Flush. The highest ranking poker hand wins the pot. Likewise, a straight flush is five cards of the same suit in sequential order. In some special hands, the joker counts as a fifth card.

The “button” antes are replacing the traditional antes. The button antes increase the size of the pot before the flop. Button antes are used in tournaments, especially in tournaments where players have to post big blinds. Button antes are also used to increase the size of the pot before the rake is paid.
There are many poker variants that share some of the same features, such as betting intervals. In some poker variants, a “big blind” is required to be posted by the player to the left of the button. This is a forced bet that gives the player something to chase. Button antes also provide the player with something to call when the next round of betting starts. The ante gives the player an incentive to fight for the pot after the first round of betting.
In most poker variants, the best hand is determined by the highest ranking hand. The highest ranking poker hand can include a straight flush, a five-of-a-kind, or a hand comprised of four of a kind and a flush. Other special hands include a full house, four of a kind, and a Royal Flush. Those are the three standard poker hands, but the royal flush is the best of the bunch.
A good example of the high card is a pair of aces. A royal flush beats a straight flush. A four-of-a-kind is when the player has all four of the Aces. Another example is the ace-queen high, or AA7422. The joker is not shown in profile, but it counts as the fifth card in some special hands.
A “button ante” is similar to the ante, but it contributes to the pot only after the flop. Button antes are common in cash games and tournaments, but they are not as important in poker as they are in other games. In cash games, a player is required to place a certain amount of chips in the pot. In tournaments, a player must post the big blind and small blind. The big blind is $2, while the small blind is $1.
